March In Okinawa
There are two significant days on Okinawa in March. The first one is March 4th, which is Sanshin Day in Okinawa. 3-4 in Japanese pronounces San-Shi. Sanshin in life in Okinawa. Songs about Okinawa, often composed or played by Okinawans singers, are called 島唄 (Shi-Ma-U-Ta). There is no Shimauta without Sanshin. When the first group of Okinawa migrants arrived in Hawaii by boat, they carried with them sweet potatoes, other simple belongings, and Sanshin. The second important day in March is Ocean Opening Day. On this day, all public beaches are open for business. Local families crowd the beach - summer officially begins in Okinawa.
