Inspired by the rich history, diverse culture and the beautiful color of Okinawa (Ryukyu Islands), this map captures the year-long around the island travel experience of the designer.
This map consists of the name of each city in Okinawa written in Japan following the shape of the city. Since its initial launch on 2016, it has become one of the most celebrated gifts and souvenirs produced in Okinawa.
This map is your guide to Okinawa. There are over 30 hidden symbols on the map. Each symbol links to a story, local legend, Okinawa folktale, or a famous local product in Okinawa.
Colors used on this poster are extracted from the leaves of Okinawa screwpine. Screwpine is called Adan in Okinawa. It is a symbolic and useful plant dating back to the dawn of civilization in Okinawa. Unlike palm tree, screwpine doesn't want to be tall and standout. Instead, it stays low and grounded. Okinawan screwpine spends its entire life to build a dense network of roots, so strong that can survive from seawater and typhoon.
