Design Inspirations
If Okinawa was a book, Hanagasa and Ryukyu kimono is no doubt the cover. Together they show and tell us Okinawa's past and future. The yellow and red combo comes from ancient Chinese influence during the Ryukyu era. Only the king had the privilege to wear yellow, as it symbolizes the highest and untouchable power. Influenced by the Japanese kimono culture, the Okinawa version paints a unique history about the land and the people. Only on Okinawa you can see such a unique combination.
As Okinawa was a cultural mix pot in the past, she continues to be the place where cultures come to blend in harmony. In this design, a young lady is looking out to the ocean. Under the fabric of Okinawa's brilliant tradition, she had a curious outlook about the world on the other end of the sea. Our world today is connected. We can meet and communicate with people anywhere instantaneously, but the body still craves for the journey.
