Okinawa is a tropical paradise, but it isn't always summer in Okinawa. Island life in Okinawa is much more than palm trees and beautiful beaches. As a melting pot of Japanese, Chinese, and American culture and traditions, you could experience entirely different weather, food, and activities in each month on the island. In this series called 12 Months of Okinawa, we highlight some of the most remarkable experiences every month in Okinawa.
In January, you can feel a hint of spring when Meijiro birds start hopping around sakura trees. In Okinawa, sakura (cherry blossom) blooms in January, and then slowly march northwards. By the time sakura blooms in mainland Japanese, it is almost the end of March.
Meanwhile, after the sunrises from the east on New Year's day, Okinawans switch gears into spring mode. In the design for January, we feature the sunrise view from the top of Katsuren castle and sakura.
Let the sunlight form Okinawa warm up your morning beverage. Let the blooming sakura remind you that we must accept the end of something to begin to build something new. Whether you're drinking your morning coffee, evening tea, or something in between – this mug's for you! It's sturdy and glossy with a vivid print that'll withstand the microwave and dishwasher.
